E-commerce sales in the US in the third quarter increased 7.5 per cent year-on-year to $289 billion while total retail sales grew 2 per cent, according to the Census Bureau but Americans returned 17.3 per cent of their online purchases last year compared to only 10 per cent of in-store purchases, according to the National Retail Federation. This is especially true for clothing, where shoppers tend to order an item in different sizes and colours and return those they don’t like.
