I always wondered why Esselunga was light years ahead of its competitors, and hearing the story told by Giuseppe Caprotti gave me some answers.
Beyond family matters, the fact that he studied abroad and worked his way up through the ranks around the world to learn from even the best, denotes a vision that is lacking in many Italian companies (where instead we tend to hire relatives and friends who are poorly prepared). He must have been an innovative and at the same time ‘gentle’ leader.
The personal story, on the other hand, is told with modesty and humanity. It moved me because it almost seems as if there is an invisible force that tends to repeat painful patterns from generation to generation (it would be interesting to analyse them from the perspective of family constellations to ‘break the spell’). I hope the book will help in this regard! I will read it.
