Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of beef, with 3.5 million tonnes of exports last year worth USD 18 billion. According to a trade association, its exports in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 18% in volume and by more than a third in terms of turnover… (n.b.: the Brazilian JBS group, also present in Italy, is the third largest food producer in the world).
In April, Ontario cattle ranchers wrote to Carney opposing Mercosur access, ‘as it would introduce low-cost, lower quality imports that would end up harming consumers, the environment, rural communities, and farming families‘(the sector in Canada has a turnover of $34.2 billion).
Two major dangers could result from Mercosur implementation: imports of cheap products and pesticides.
