Eurospin continues to open new stores right next to its competitors. Do all these new openings follow the same pattern?

The Large-Scale Retail Map compares Cagliari, Rome and Rimini and reveals a recurring pattern: Eurospin chooses already mature catchment areas that are easily accessible and have a strong presence of discount stores and competing supermarkets.

I don’t understand what surprises GDOWeek: this is the strategy Aldi has always used in the US. Is it opening a supermarket or a hypermarket? I’ll set up shop right next door and capture a share of its customer traffic. This was already happening when I worked at Dominick’s in the late 1980s.
